Experience a Day Through a Different Perspective

Poverty can shape everyday choices in ways that aren’t always easy to see or understand. The Poverty Escape Room offers an opportunity to explore those challenges from a different perspective through an interactive, story-based experience.

Join us to build understanding, challenge assumptions, and take part in meaningful conversation about how we can better support individuals and families experiencing poverty.

What to Expect

During this interactive, story-based experience, you’ll work with others to navigate challenges faced by a family experiencing poverty. You’ll encounter limited resources, unexpected situations, and difficult decisions along the way.

You won’t be asked to “escape” poverty in two hours. Instead, the experience offers a glimpse into the barriers and pressures that can shape everyday decisions.

Following the experience, you’ll take part in a guided discussion to reflect on what you noticed and consider how those insights can inform your workplace, interactions, and community.

FAQs

  • The focus is on exploring a family’s circumstances, making decisions, and discussing what you learn. You don’t need escape room experience or special puzzle-solving skills.
  • No prior knowledge or training is needed. Bring your curiosity, your perspective, and a willingness to listen and learn.
  • Financial hardship can affect employees, coworkers, neighbors, students, and customers. Understanding the barriers people face can help you respond more thoughtfully in your workplace and community.
  • Absolutely! Come on your own, with a colleague, or with a group. You’ll work with others during the experience.
  • No. The activities focus on a fictional family’s story. You can participate in the discussion without sharing your own financial circumstances or personal experiences.
  • No single activity can capture the full experience of poverty. This session offers a starting point for recognizing barriers, questioning assumptions, and listening more closely to people whose experiences may differ from your own.
