Family Friendly Walk-Through

FAMILY ENGAGEMENT STARTS WITH CONNECTION

Building Stronger Family-School Partnerships

Every family deserves to feel valued, heard, and connected to their school community. Family Friendly Walk-Throughs bring families and school staff together to celebrate strengths, gather meaningful feedback, and identify opportunities for growth.

Through collaboration and shared perspectives, Compass helps schools strengthen family engagement and create environments where every family feels they belong.

OUR APPROACH

How Family Friendly Walk-Throughs Work

Our four-step process brings families and school staff together to gather feedback, celebrate strengths, and identify opportunities for growth. From initial surveys to actionable recommendations, Compass guides schools through each step.

1

Survey Families & Staff

Timeline: 1+ Month Before the Walk-Through

We begin by gathering feedback from families and staff through digital surveys. These insights help us better understand their experiences and identify opportunities to strengthen your school community.

2

Walk Through Your School

Timeline: Day of the Walk-Through

A team of school staff and family members tours the school, completes a checklist, and engages in meaningful conversations about the school environment and family experiences.

3

Prepare Your School Report

Timeline: 1 Month After the Walk-Through

Compass provides a detailed report highlighting your school’s strengths and opportunities for improvement across four key components of family friendliness, giving your team valuable insights to guide future family engagement efforts.

4

Support Your Next Steps

Timeline: Ongoing

The work doesn’t stop with the report. Compass can provide additional technical assistance to help your school turn recommendations into meaningful improvements that strengthen family engagement.

Turn Family Perspectives Into Meaningful Action

Family Friendly Walk-Throughs help schools identify strengths and opportunities for improvement through the perspectives of families and community members. These insights help school teams develop practical solutions, strengthen family-school partnerships, and support student success.

Becky Fjerstad Wessington Springs Elementary Principal

“Wessington Springs Elementary School held a STEAM night for students and parents in the fall.  The event was very well organized with engaging STEAM activities that were enjoyed by all.  Students went home excited and wanted to recreate these activities at home.  It was a great family engagement event that was well attended by our school community.”

Kallie Gebhard Horace Mann Elementary (Rapid City) Intervention Specialist

“Our school has been blessed with the support of BHSSC. They have supported us in engaging families with fun, hands-on activities. They make all activities a positive experience for the kids and the families! This partnership has been beneficial for our school in so many ways!”
