Literacy Family Engagement Offerings

Browse the full menu of Science of Reading and literacy family engagement supports available to schools and districts. Support options can be customized to align with your goals, audience, and implementation needs.

All supports listed below align with ELA-SD grant priorities and are approved for ELA-SD funding. While designed to support ELA-SD grant implementation, they are available to any school or district seeking to strengthen family engagement, build shared understanding of literacy practices, and support literacy learning beyond the classroom.

These options reflect potential services. If your team has additional ideas or priorities, we’d welcome the opportunity to discuss them further, build a cohesive plan and cost estimate, and develop the corresponding resources to support your work.

Newsletter Inserts

Grade Span: PreK, K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8, 9-12 

These ready-to-use newsletter inserts help schools strengthen family engagement while reinforcing key principles of the Science of Reading. Aligned to the Big 5 components of reading, each insert provides family-friendly explanations and practical strategies families can use at home. Each grade span includes nine ready-to-share inserts for print or digital newsletters.

Literacy for Life: A College, Career & Life Ready Media Campaign Toolkit

Grade Span: 9, 10, 11, & 12

This Science of Reading-aligned media campaign toolkit provides ready-to-send monthly messages that help families support adolescent literacy development. Designed for grades 9-12, the messages connect literacy skills to academic achievement, postsecondary success, digital literacy, and career readiness. Resources can be shared through email, text messaging, and other family communication platforms.

Rack Cards

Grade Span: PreK, K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8, 9-12

These family-friendly rack cards help schools bring the Science of Reading into everyday conversations with families. Each card explains key literacy concepts and offers practical strategies families can use to support reading, talking, and writing at home. Rack cards are available in grade-span sets featuring four literacy topics tailored to each age group.

Family Reading Quest Monthly Bingo

Grade Span: PreK, K, 1 , 2, 3, 4, and 5

These monthly bingo cards encourage families to build literacy skills through fun, hands-on activities connected to the Science of Reading. Activities align with the Big 5 components of reading and fit naturally into everyday routines. Each grade level includes 9 monthly bingo cards, along with introductory literacy resources for families.

Take-home Literacy Backpack

Grade Span: PreK, K-1, 2-3

These take-home literacy backpacks provide families with engaging, age-appropriate activities grounded in the Science of Reading. Resources are designed to reinforce classroom learning while supporting literacy development through everyday routines at home. Backpack contents vary by grade span and include family-friendly tools, games, and guided activities.

Consider pairing the PreK backpacks with a Literacy Backpack Workshop for families.

Chapter Connections: A Middle School Family Literacy Journal

Grade Span: 6-8

This family literacy journal encourages middle school students and their caregivers to strengthen literacy skills through shared reading experiences. Centered around a chapter book, the journal includes discussion prompts, reflection activities, vocabulary work, writing opportunities, and real-world connections. The resource promotes meaningful family conversations while supporting comprehension and literacy growth.

Professional Development & Support

Family Feedback Surveys

Grade Span: All Levels

These customized family feedback surveys help schools better understand how families perceive and engage with literacy efforts at home and at school. We design the survey, analyze responses, and provide a clear summary report to support planning and decision-making. Results can guide future family engagement and Science of Reading initiatives.

Online Course for Educators: Family Engagement for Literacy Success

Grade Span: Professional

This graduate-level course helps educators strengthen family partnerships that support literacy growth and student success. Available in asynchronous or synchronous formats, the course provides practical strategies, research-based resources, and opportunities for reflection and application. Optional staff trainings can be added to deepen learning and support implementation.

Family Literacy Events

Facilitation of DOE Early Literacy Parent Workshop

Grade Span: PreK-K

Partner with us to host an engaging early literacy workshop using the South Dakota DOE Early Literacy Parent Workshop Toolkit. Families learn about foundational reading skills and practical ways to support literacy development at home. Compass provides facilitation, materials, and implementation support for a successful event.

SOR Literacy Backpack Workshop

Grade Span: Pre-K

This interactive workshop helps families learn how to use literacy backpack materials to support early reading development at home. Caregivers participate in hands-on activities alongside their children while exploring key concepts from the Science of Reading. Each participating family receives a literacy backpack to continue learning beyond the workshop.

PreK/SoR Family Fun Night

Grade Span: Pre-K

This PreK-focused Family Fun Night introduces families to foundational literacy skills through engaging, developmentally appropriate activities. Families explore practical ways to support early reading development through talking, playing, and interacting with language at home. We provide all materials, event support, promotional resources, and a post-event summary report.

SoR Family Fun Night Event- Family Reading Quest: Chapter 1

Grade Span: Pre-K-8

Partner with us to host an interactive Family Fun Night that brings literacy learning to life through hands-on activities and family engagement. Families explore how children learn to read while discovering practical ways to support literacy at home. Compass provides materials, facilitation support, promotional resources, and a post-event summary report.

SoR Family Fun Night Event- Family Reading Quest: Chapter 2

Grade Span: Pre-K-8

Continue the learning with a second Family Reading Quest event featuring new literacy activities and experiences for families. Families deepen their understanding of reading development while strengthening connections between home and school. We provide materials, facilitation support, promotional resources, and a post-event summary report.
